You should just leave it with the default settings. The options box will come up for the tool. To use it first select the object you want to edit. The space is filled up more but it’s a little unorganized and the pieces are all disconnected. You can do an automatic unwrap to get something like this. It is already laid out okay but we really want to maximize the UV space. The object you want to unwrap will start off unedited having UVs looking something like this. I added it to my shelf for ease of access. You can find the tool if you go to UV Editing under the Bonus Tools tab. I will use the AUUT with a simple cube I have created. Once that’s checked off we can get started. After you download and install the bonus tools, start up Maya, then go to the plugin manager and make sure Unfold3d.mll is loaded or else the AUUT won’t work. But for the rest of you, you’ll first need to download Maya’s bonus tools from this link in order to get started. If you don’t already know why you would use UV mapping, this Autodesk link will give a basic explanation on the topic of Creating UVs. It gives you more control when creating UVs when compared to your basic Automatic Unwrap that does that entire unwrap for you. The Auto Unwrap UV’s Tool, or AUUT for short, is a great tool for creating UVs for your models. Today I will demonstrate how to use the Auto Unwrap UV’s Tool in Maya 2016.
